Summary

Reread from when I was 10 or 11 and just getting into horror。 I definitely remember the story being better (but even back then I didn't care about the priest's part of the story)。The seventies were so crazy because you could just give someone an ugly four foot tall lion statue as a present。 Who does that。 Reread from when I was 10 or 11 and just getting into horror。 I definitely remember the story being better (but even back then I didn't care about the priest's part of the story)。The seventies were so crazy because you could just give someone an ugly four foot tall lion statue as a present。 Who does that。 。。。more

Is it true; is it fraud? Of course, we’ll never know。 We’ll all have our opinions as to whether this book should be shelved as non-fiction。 So, I intend only to rate this book relative to its quality as an exercise is storytelling in the narrative non-fiction form。 It’s an entertaining read, definitely scary in areas。 A classic, it defines many of the haunted house tropes without any seeming trite or ineffective, even all these years after publication。 Not artful, but well enough written for it’ Is it true; is it fraud? I saw the movie a while ago but I decided I wanted to read the book。 I loved it。。。I couldn't put it down。 It is actually a quick read。。。。。it's been a while since I have read possession, demonic, potergeist, etc type books and it is amazing。I think that if I was the Lutz's I would have gone mad。 If you like books that will scare the poop out of you, this is definitely a good choice。 I saw the movie a while ago but I decided I wanted to read the book。 I loved it。。。I couldn't put it down。 It is actually a quick read。。。。。it's been a while since I have read possession, demonic, potergeist, etc type books and it is amazing。I think that if I was the Lutz's I would have gone mad。 If you like books that will scare the poop out of you, this is definitely a good choice。 。。。more

To be fair, I listened to the whole book on a long road trip, so my experience might have been different if I had picked it up a chapter at a time。 As it was, drinking it all in one gulp, it got tiresome。 The Lutzes just sounded like idiots。 I would have fled the house, like, six manifestations ago。 Still, it was nice to have caught up on a horror classic that I really should have read before now。

First ever audiobook。 This was。。。meh。

The moment George wondered how he'd pay for the house I suspected an elaborate hoax。 Reminds me of the balloon boy hoax from a few years ago。 It's sad that they were able to use a real tragedy as a backdrop for all this, they even threw in Native American burial grounds。The story itself was laughably bad。 No atmosphere, over-the-top ghost events (especially considering this is sold as a "true-ish story")。 It came off as trying too hard。 The testimonials of the mediums (etc) at the end made it wo The moment George wondered how he'd pay for the house I suspected an elaborate hoax。 Reminds me of the balloon boy hoax from a few years ago。 It's sad that they were able to use a real tragedy as a backdrop for all this, they even threw in Native American burial grounds。The story itself was laughably bad。 No atmosphere, over-the-top ghost events (especially considering this is sold as a "true-ish story")。 It came off as trying too hard。 The testimonials of the mediums (etc) at the end made it worse。 If the audiobook wasn't so short I'd DNF。I've never seen the movie but it'd probably work better that way, especially the giant pig with glowing eyes。 I'd recommend skipping this and trying The Exorcist or The Shining instead。 。。。more

i preferred the movie because it felt more realistic but the whole story is pretty scary for me, i’ve seen documentaries that explains what the defeo family went through & i’ve also seen version that people say one of his sisters talked about killing the family before ronald did on the night they got killed。 it wraps your head if you’re into horror & criminality。

This was so bad。“George Lutz, ex-Marine, admitted he was scared。”lol what

Terrorífico en algunas partes,te hace querer seguir leyendo ,un gran libro de terror sin duda alguna que nos pone en los zapatos de los Lutz y nos hace pensar en si todos los sucesos fueron reales o no

True story or embellished tale, Jay Anson has an excellent way of sending the hair on the back of your neck up, and send chills up your spine。

I give it 3。7 ✨ I have mixed feelings after finishing this book。 I really enjoy it, obviously, it was not scary at all the narrator has a very appealing voice and makes you dive into the story。 In the middle of the story, I felt that it was too slow and not so vivid the explanations。 Maybe, because I have already watched the films but for me, it is worth time to listen to。 I feel unsatisfied with the end of the book but it is okay。

Terrible book, terrible prose。I know there are other factors influencing the main characters, but they have Skyrim bandit level intelligence。See a demon pig outside of your house?"Must have been the wind。"You and your partner decide there's an evil presence in the house trying to hurt your kids?"Let's go to bed and stay here for four more weeks。"Find green slime oozing from your walls?"Better stick my finger in it and then taste it!" If you want to have nightmares for the rest of your life this book is for you。 It's super creepy and downright frightening。 I couldn't put it down, finished it in one day。 I'm probably never going to sleep again。 Definitely delivered the scares。 If you want to have nightmares for the rest of your life this book is for you。 It's super creepy and downright frightening。 I couldn't put it down, finished it in one day。 I'm probably never going to sleep again。 Definitely delivered the scares。 。。。more

The book is well written but I think I would have liked it better if I didn’t already know they had debunked most of their claims (aside from the actual murder that took place in the house)。 So at this point in the game, the movie is much better。

Not one single aspect of this book would I consider frightening, eerie or creepy。 It feels like a child’s feeble attempt at a ghost story。 The writing style is awful。 112 Ocean St! 112 Ocean St!! Exclamation points everywhere!!! Repeating of the house address on every page!! The redundancy was so annoying, I ended up just skimming through to the end。 A quick read, but monumentally disappointing。 It is beyond me how this was every considered a “national sensation”。 😂

Charles

I did not like it。 The third person, staccato, just-the-facts narration was off putting。 The ease to use God as a defense and cure all was irrational。 The creatures were creepy and it gave off a great horror vibe。

Melanie Shipp

The original American Horror Story with bits of Stranger Things mixed in。 Truly a hair raising story。

Mia Mor

This was very very good。 I wasn’t scared till the end, and if anyone else has recommendations for books like it i will take it。 Seriously probably one of my new favorite books。

Ta powieśc łączy w sobie moje ulubione motywy jeśli chodzi o grozę: nawiedzony dom i opętanie。 Niby człowiek wie, że to tylko książka ale jej wieczorne czytanie może skutkować problemami z zaśnięciem。

The book plays out like a movie and whilst I can't remember seeing the movie itself, I believe it is fairly similar。 A told story as based on real life, it is a nice way of conveying the events, but also makes it less believable due to the sheer level of detail there。 Entertaining but nothing quite striking。 The book plays out like a movie and whilst I can't remember seeing the movie itself, I believe it is fairly similar。 A told story as based on real life, it is a nice way of conveying the events, but also makes it less believable due to the sheer level of detail there。 Entertaining but nothing quite striking。 。。。more

Ok, my review is based solely on my enjoyment and frustration with this book and has nothing to do with whether or not the events described here are real or not (I have read books, articles, and watched documentaries on that subject, but I had not until now read the actual source material)。 tIf you have not read this 70’s staple of your parents bookshelf, I am giving it a soft recommendation。 I am a big fan of haunted house stories and found this one (one of the OG’s of the genre) to be a quick Ok, my review is based solely on my enjoyment and frustration with this book and has nothing to do with whether or not the events described here are real or not (I have read books, articles, and watched documentaries on that subject, but I had not until now read the actual source material)。 tIf you have not read this 70’s staple of your parents bookshelf, I am giving it a soft recommendation。 I am a big fan of haunted house stories and found this one (one of the OG’s of the genre) to be a quick and mostly entertaining read。 tThe first thing a good haunted house story has to do is provide a roadblock to the family simply leaving the premises to go live somewhere not haunted and thus concluding the story。 The Amityville Horror quickly establishes this two fold, first, the family is broke after tying up all their money in buying this big, old, haunted, place (this is the reason most future stories will use too) and secondly, the husband and wife fall under a sort of trance of the house that makes them want to stay even while being terrified。 ttWhen George and Kathleen Lutz first move into the home they are thrilled to get so much house, for so little money, but it’s not too long before they begin to notice odd things。 The author does a good job of starting with minor occurrences; George always feels a draft in the house, to build suspense and believability。 But for me as a reader there does reach a point where you would simply be homeless before you stay another night in this house, like when you see your wife levitating above your bed。 The book becomes monotonous by the last 100 pages as it settles into a creepy thing will occur, but then George and Kathy justify why they are going to stay in the house, and then repeat。 Also monotonous about this book is that the priest called in to bless the house, Father Ray, receives as much story time as the Lutz family。 So we get page after page of him worrying about the family, trying to call the family, or wanting to go back to the house but suddenly being struck down with the flu。 I could have done without about 80% of the Father Ray subplot。 tI did like this book and can give it a soft recommendation because I enjoy going back to this mid 1970’s time period where some of these milder scares have a larger impact。 There is a nostalgia and charm to both this family and the book as a whole。 The Lutzes and the readers of that time had not yet been exposed to many of the horrors of today- both fictional and real。 There is also something to be said for the dry and clinical way that the events are described in the book as facts being recorded (again, not getting into that) that adds a strong sense of crepiness to what you are reading。 The book never waivers in its belief that all it is telling you really occurred and that at times can become very convincing- and spooky! 。。。more

Dude…how dumb are these people to stay so long in this house? Also, they kept their dog outside on a chain in the snow…they deserved whatever happened to them! And, THEY BOUGHT MURDERED PEOPLE’S FURNITURE AND HOUSE! WTF?? This was only 4-star cuz I can’t quite believe how stupid they were…it boggles my mind。

John Geddie

I don’t have a lot of faith in the veracity of the story, but as fiction it’s just chilling。

I didn't know this was supposedly based on a true story and really liked it at first。 But it just didn't go anywhere。 Nothing is resolved and it jumps around between the Lutzes and the priest with no page breaks (at least on the kindle version I read) which was confusing。 I'm giving 2 because it started out okay but just stayed the same level with no explanation of anything。 Given that it's definitely not true they could have given some resolution。 I didn't know this was supposedly based on a true story and really liked it at first。 But it just didn't go anywhere。 Nothing is resolved and it jumps around between the Lutzes and the priest with no page breaks (at least on the kindle version I read) which was confusing。 I'm giving 2 because it started out okay but just stayed the same level with no explanation of anything。 Given that it's definitely not true they could have given some resolution。 。。。more
